TYPES OF FIBRES
How carpet looks and performs largely depends on the fibres that they made from.
Wool has long been recognised as the best due to it being soft and warm, its resilience and maintains it look for longer. It is environmentally friendly and sustainable. Wool can also be used in a blended carpet with man made fibres, an 80/20 mix or a 50/50 mix.
Synthetic fibre carpets are hard wearing and where polypropylene is used there is an additional benefit of being ‘stainfree’ and easy to clean.
Different Carpet Styles

TWIST PILE CARPETS
This style of carpet is the most common, is hard wearing and the ranges available will suit all budgets.
Twist carpets are generally classed as short pile and are available in a synthetic material (nylon, polypropylene) or wool mix material (80% wool and 20% synthetic).
These carpets are ideal for all areas of the home.

LOOP PILE CARPETS
This style of carpet is commonly regarded as the most hard wearing style of carpets whilst also referred to as ‘naturals’ due to their woven design appearance and natural colours.
The pile height is short as the fibres are woven tightly together, this is available in a synthetic material however these carpets are mainly 100% wool providing strength and are great at keeping their appearance as the pile does not flatten.
A great choice for all areas of the home.

SAXONY CARPETS
Saxony carpets have the deepest pile therefore making them feel luxurious and are made from synthetic fibres. Due to the soft feel and deep pile of these carpets they are more popular in bedrooms and areas with low traffic use and not recommended for heavy traffic areas as the pile can flatten quicker.

COIR / SISAL CARPETS
Commonly referred to as ‘naturals’ due to these carpets being made from coir, sisal or seagrass and have a rough texture to them often very natural in their tones of colour.
As these carpets are made of natural materials and can change with varying temperatures within the home they need to be fully stuck when fitted to ensure that they do not shrink.
Some of the ranges are not suitable for stairs.
UNDERLAY
Underlay is as important in choosing the right carpet for you and the reasons for this are:
– Underlay is vital for the new carpet to sit properly and wear evenly.
– It improves the feel of the carpet underfoot.
– It increases heat, sound and noise insulation.
– It reduces pile compression and enables a carpet to retain its appearance for longer therefore prolonging the life of a carpet.
Hatcher Flooring are able to provide expert advice on the best underlay options for your needs.
